WHAT IS A DENTAL FILLING?List Item 1
A dental filling is a restorative treatment used to repair a tooth that has been affected by decay, minor fractures, or wear. After the damaged portion of the tooth is carefully removed, the area is cleaned and filled with a strong, durable material that restores the tooth’s structure and prevents further decay.
Fillings not only restore function and appearance, but they also help preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible. With proper care, fillings can last many years and play a key role in protecting your oral health.

WHEN DO YOU NEED A FILLING?
You may need a filling if you have:
- A cavity caused by tooth decay
- A chipped or cracked tooth
- Worn down enamel from grinding (bruxism) or acidic foods
- Sensitivity or discomfort when eating sweets, hot, or cold items
- Dark spots or visible holes on the surface of a tooth
During your check-up, we use digital X-rays and thorough examinations to determine if a filling is the right treatment for you.

TYPES OF DENTAL FILLINGS
We offer several types of filling materials based on your dental needs and cosmetic preferences:
Composite Resin Fillings
Tooth-colored and aesthetically pleasing, composite fillings are ideal for front or visible teeth. They bond directly to the tooth and blend seamlessly with your natural enamel.
Amalgam Fillings
Made from a silver-colored mixture of metals, amalgam fillings are extremely durable and typically used for back teeth where chewing pressure is greatest.
Ceramic (Porcelain) Fillings
These offer a high level of durability and stain resistance. Ceramic fillings are often used when a large portion of the tooth needs to be restored.
Glass Ionomer Fillings
A good option for children or areas not subject to heavy chewing, these fillings release fluoride, which can help protect the tooth from future decay.

WHAT ARE TEMPORARY FILLINGS?
Temporary fillings are short-term solutions used when a permanent filling can’t be placed right away. You may receive a temporary filling if:
- You’re in the middle of a multi-step procedure (such as a root canal)
- Your tooth needs time to heal before placing the final restoration
- You have an emergency or sudden pain that needs quick relief
- The dentist needs to monitor how the tooth responds before final treatment
Temporary fillings help protect the tooth, reduce discomfort, and keep out bacteria until your next visit. However, they are not meant to last long-term and should always be replaced with a permanent solution to avoid further damage or decay.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A FILLING APPOINTMENT
Getting a filling is a straightforward and comfortable procedure:
- The area is numbed to ensure a pain-free experience
- The decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is gently removed
- The tooth is cleaned and prepped for the filling material
- The filling is placed, shaped, and hardened
- Your bite is adjusted to ensure comfort and proper function
Most filling procedures are completed in under an hour, and you can return to your normal activities shortly after your appointment.
-
CARING FOR YOUR FILLINGS
With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, your fillings can last many years. To keep them in great shape:
- Brush and floss daily to prevent new decay
- Avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or pens
- Minimize sugary snacks and acidic beverages
- Schedule cleanings and exams every 4 to 6 months
If you ever notice discomfort, sensitivity, or a filling that feels loose or cracked, let us know right away so we can evaluate and repair it if needed.
